Contributing To Our Communities
Morvest has focused its efforts on the empowerment of the communities surrounding its operations. The group targets 1% of total net profit after tax (NPAT) per year for allocation to CSI initiatives, supported by 1% of each subsidiary’s NPAT. Accordingly during the year more than R1 million was committed by the group to CSI initiatives. The Social and Ethics Committee is tasked with regularly reviewing CSI requests and beneficiaries. All beneficiary organisations must adhere to legal compliance and registration in terms of the Guide to the Non-Profit Organisations Act 71 of 1997, in order to be considered.
Further requirements for eligibility include the review by the committee of the constitution, demographic information, financial statements and general management of the organisation in question. Organisations supported during the year represent sustainable beneficiaries exposed to a long-term commitment from the group.
These included:
• The Uluvolwethu Rural Development Initiative
A bakery/bread making initiative based in Qunu Community in the Eastern Cape providing bread making skills and resources to members of the community and in doing so feeds and empowers the community. This is a sustainable programme which improves and promotes rural livelihoods. Morvest’s contribution for the year was R450 000.
• Ubunye Educare Centre
A school feeding and education scheme in the Western Cape. Morvest’s financial support of R450 000 reached 200 children and six staff members during the year.
• Kidshaven
For the past four years Morvest has contributed to remedial classes for Kidshaven children in government and private schools. During the year the group increased its support and is now also sponsoring the school fees of nine pupils at Willowmore High School, Benoni. Morvest is now also attending to the needs of Kidshaven staff, especially in terms of training and development. The group conducted training of around 20 staff members on various topics including self-assessments and soft skills, which assisted in interaction with fellow colleagues and the children.
• AIDS Bannerthon
Morvest participates annually in the bannerthon, purchasing banners for all its campuses. The money raised goes towards supporting those living with HIV/AIDS.
• The Way Imvelo Daycare Centre
A nursery school in Soweto with very limited support. It offers crucial care to children.
• Casual Day
Morvest continued its annual support of Casual Day in support of people living with disabilities.
• National Bandana Day
Morvest continued its annual involvement in National Bandana Day in support of Leukaemia sufferers.
• Certain Morvest companies also make smaller individual contributions towards NGOs and schools during every year, either in terms of monetary value or personal employee time.
Morvest’s overall focus in terms of socio-economic development is on education. To this end the Morvest Academy offers learnership/internship programmes (see Our people – Learning and Development). In addition Morvest actively supports the development of young learners through other methods.
Lebone Secondary School in Soweto is currently one of a number of schools benefiting from ongoing interaction with Morvest managers to obtain life skills, motivation, goals setting skills, etc. Support at Lebone is in its fifth consecutive year.
* Going forward we will endeavour to report on value for each contribution of these CSI initiatives |
